8 Ways to Better Your Body on a Budget

One of the most popular resolutions every year is “get in shape” or “lose weight,” but by February most people have slipped back into old habits. Don’t let your wallet be one of the excuses why you don’t reach your goals this year. It is possible to get in shape without going broke. Try these get-fit tips while maximizing your financial success:

1. Schedule Your Time.
Mark your calendar in advance for a specific time of day for 4-5 days a week so you can mold your routine to your schedule. If you stick to your calendar, you’re more likely to make time for your workout. Put your clothes out the night before and make a playlist to keep you motivated.

2. Keep a log
I’m sure you’ve heard it plenty of time “calories in, calories out.” If you don’t know what you’re putting in your body, then how will you know what you need to burn. With free apps like myFitnesspal and Lose it!, you can stay on top of your meals. You are less likely to reach for something unhealthy if you have to write it down later.

3. Enlist a fitness buddy
You and a friend may share similar goals, so by making each other accountable, you can develop your needs together. By scheduling your workouts together, you won’t talk yourself out of it.

4. Free online & workout apps
There is an endless collection of workout materials online for free. You don’t need an account with Hulu to partake in the free workout videos they offer. Nike offers a free app with different workout programs ranging from 15-45 minutes. Find what works for you, set the challenge, and do it.

5. Hit the DVD rack at the library
Don’t buy a DVD that will grow stale in a couple of weeks and get discarded to the back of your DVD collection. Use the library! By now, most libraries have built a pretty generous compilation of DVDs including a workout genre. Change up your routine by borrowing a different set every couple weeks.

6. Do intervals during commercials
Do you watch a lot of TV? Get your booty on the floor during the commercials and work it. Try doing an interval set during each break: 10 burpees, 30 crunches, 25 jumping jacks, 20 push-ups (on your knees if you need to). If there is any time left after your set, try planking till your show is back on. See our pinterest page for workout routines as well as health & wellness tips.

7. Take it outside
Hit the pavement or the trail. Sign up for a race to motivate your healthy lifestyle. Try completing the 100 Missouri Miles challenge and log the miles you spend outdoors. You’ll even get a fancy medal!

8. Join a local co-op
Why does it seem that healthier food is more expensive than the cheesy, greasy, fried stuff? By joining a co-op, you’re electing to provide your family with local and budget friendly foods.

In short, being strapped for cash can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to affect your waistline. By focusing on what’s already available to you, you’ll be able to enhance your productive lifestyle while maintaining your financial plan. It’s a win-win!
