Welcome to the first installment of DIY Friday! As a lover of do-it-yourself projects, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to test out things at home and then post them here on Fridays—breaking down the savings of homemade vs. store bought.
This week, I thought I’d start off with something simple that families could easily make on a Friday evening for dinner on the cheap.
And so I bring you taco seasoning! Here’s what you need:
1 Tbs Chili Powder
1/4 Tsp Garlic Powder
1/4 Tsp Onion Powder
1/4 Tsp Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
1/2 Tsp Paprika
1/4 Tsp Cumin
1 Tsp Cayenne Pepper (less if you don’t like the heat)
1/4 Tsp Parsley Flakes
1/4 Tsp Basil Flakes
1/4 Tsp Garlic Salt
Mix it all together and you’re ready for taco night! Because a lot of these ingredients were already in my spice cabinet (I put red pepper flakes on just about everything), I only needed to pick up a couple of things from the store, making this project only cost a couple pennies per serving (as opposed to $1.29 or more from the store). Which doesn’t seem like a lot, but it does add up over the course of the year. Plus, it’s fun and easy to make with kids!
Now, on to the Tacos! Use 2 Tbs of your taco seasoning per lb of ground meat of your choice (I used turkey). Add more if you like it spicy. And cooked till meat is browned.
Once your meat is done, you’re ready for dinner! Make a buffet of different toppings and shells. We used Butter lettuce ($2.49 Schnucks) and mexican shredded cheese ($1.79 Aldis). And Voila!
Now it’s your turn to DIY! If you like our recipe, take a picture and tag us on Instagram @tigerscu. Or tell us how it turned out in the comments.
